# How to add a link to your Discord bio

Discord's About Me holds 190 characters including links, but its help pages never say which formats are clickable. Here is what is documented and how to test.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

To add a link to your Discord bio, open User Settings, go to **Profiles**, paste the link into **About Me**, and press **Save**. Discord's help page says About Me can hold "markdown text and links" within 190 characters, but it does not say which link formats turn into clickable links, so you need to test yours.

Discord's help pages call the bio "About Me." This guide uses the wording of Discord Support pages read on October 6, 2026, says where those pages go quiet, and gives a short test you can run on your own profile.

## How to add a link to your Discord bio, step by step

Discord's [Custom Profiles](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4403147417623-Custom-Profiles) page gives the path to the Profiles tab and describes About Me. The steps below follow it, and the page has no separate numbered steps for typing into About Me:

1. **Open User Settings.** Click the cogwheel at the bottom-left of the app.
2. **Open the Profiles tab.** Everything about your profile card lives here.
3. **Type or paste into About Me.** Put your link in the text, keeping the whole entry within 190 characters.
4. **Check the preview.** Discord says you can see how About Me will look by selecting **View Full Profile** in the Profile Preview.
5. **Press Save.**

On mobile, the same page says to tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner, then **Edit Profile**. It stops there and does not name the About Me field for mobile, so look for it on the edit screen.

## What does Discord say is clickable in your Discord bio?

Discord says links are allowed in About Me, and it never says which of them are clickable. Here is what the pages state and where they are silent, as of October 6, 2026:

| Question | What Discord's pages say | Page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Can About Me contain links? | Yes: "Markdown text and links" | Custom Profiles |
| How long can it be? | Up to 190 characters, including emojis, markdown text and links | Custom Profiles |
| Does a pasted URL become clickable? | Not stated | None |
| Do masked links work in About Me? | Not stated for About Me; documented for chat | Markdown Text 101 |
| Which markdown syntax works in About Me? | Says "markdown text," lists no syntax | Custom Profiles |

![Comparison of three places for a link on Discord. About Me: User Settings, Profiles; 190 characters including markdown and links; link click behavior not documented. Connections: User Settings, Connections; toggle display details on profile; not documented whether a connection is a clickable link. Per-server About Me: Nitro perk with the same limits and the same documentation gap.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/how-to-add-a-link-to-your-discord-bio-fig1.svg)

*Where a link can live on your Discord profile, what Discord's pages document for each, and what they leave out.*

The same Custom Profiles page lists the About Me contents as 190 characters, markdown text and links, emojis and Unicode characters. The word "links" is the only link statement on either profile page, so treat clickability as something to verify rather than assume.

## Can you make a link in your Discord bio clickable?

Discord's pages do not say whether either format works in About Me. Discord's [Markdown Text 101](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/210298617-Markdown-Text-101-Chat-Formatting-Bold-Italic-Underline) page says masked links make text a clickable or pressable hyperlink: put the displayed text in brackets, then the URL in parentheses. That page is filed under Messaging and Chat and never mentions About Me, so it proves the syntax for messages only. Use it as the first thing to try, not as a promise.

Here is a test you can run in about two minutes:

1. **Try the plain URL.** Enter a full link starting with `https://` in About Me, save, and open your profile card from a server member list.
2. **Try the masked form.** Replace it with `[Weekly notes](https://example.com/notes)`, using your own text and URL, then save and look again.
3. **Look in both places.** Check the small popout and the full profile, because Discord does not say they behave the same. Repeat on the mobile app.
4. **Keep what works.** If neither format is clickable on a screen, Discord's pages give you no promise that it should be.

## How to fit a link in the 190-character limit

Discord says the 190 characters include markdown text and links, so count everything you type. Our assumption, which Discord does not confirm, is that the brackets and parentheses of a masked link count too.

A worked example we counted: the tagged URL `https://example.com/newsletter/archive?utm_source=discord&utm_medium=profile&utm_campaign=bio` is 93 characters, nearly half the limit. Wrapped as a masked link with the 12-character label "Weekly notes", it is 109 characters. A shorter URL frees room for the rest of your bio.

Discord's pages also do not say whether it warns people before they open a link that leads outside Discord.

## Can you add social accounts to your Discord profile?

Yes, through Connections, which is separate from About Me. Discord's [Connections & Linked Roles: Community Members](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/8063233404823-Connections-Linked-Roles-Community-Members) page says the Connections tab in User Settings lets you add, remove and manage connections, and you can re-connect through the "Add accounts to your profile" flow.

- **Visibility is yours to set.** You can toggle "Display details on profile," or hide the connection completely by toggling off "display on profile."
- **Defaults differ.** Discord says visibility is default on for most connections, except those tied to real names, such as Facebook and Spotify.
- **Instagram is a special case.** In an answer about Linked Roles, Discord says it had to remove the Instagram connection and linked account data due to lack of API support. The page shows "2 years ago" as its update stamp, so check the Connections tab for what you can add today.
- **Clickability is not stated, and visibility is limited.** The page describes "Connection details," not clickable links to your accounts. It carries a "This feature is gradually rolling out!" note, and its FAQ says you can see your Connections on all servers but Connection details are only visible in the beta servers.

The page says you can connect as many accounts as you want and that Nitro is not needed for Connections or Connection details.

## Can you use a different link in each server?

Only with Nitro. Discord's [Per-Server Profiles](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409388345495-Per-Server-Profiles) page describes a Nitro perk that lets you set a different avatar, banner and About Me for each server. The per-server About Me has the same limits: up to 190 characters, markdown text and links, emojis and Unicode.

Discord also says changing a per-server profile does not change your main user profile. Whether a link in a per-server About Me is clickable is as undocumented as in the main one.

## How TrackMedia fits a Discord bio link

TrackMedia does not edit your Discord profile, and it is not a link-in-bio page builder (see [link-in-bio tools](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/link-in-bio-tools) for that category). What it can do is give the link you paste into About Me a click count.

- **Make the link.** On the Links page, choose **Shorten a link**, paste a URL, and copy the short link it returns.
- **Add your own UTM tags first.** A short link made this way adds no UTM tags. Its destination is exactly the URL you pasted, so tag it before you shorten it.
- **Read the clicks.** The [Analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics) view covers 7, 30 or 90 days: clicks, visitors, clicks per day, top links, countries, referrers, devices and browsers, with bots excluded. The approach is the same one described in [how to see who clicked your Instagram link](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-see-who-clicked-your-instagram-link).

The limits: we did not test what referrer Discord passes when someone opens a profile link, so the referrer breakdown may not name Discord. Whether a short link is shorter than your original depends on the URL you started with.

If you also announce in channels, TrackMedia's code includes a Discord connector that posts to a channel webhook, covered in [how to schedule messages on Discord](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-schedule-messages-on-discord). When you want click counts on your bio link, you can [start free with TrackMedia](https://go.trackmedia.app/signup).

## How we checked this

We opened each Discord Support page below in a browser on October 6, 2026 and copied the labels and limits from it. We did not test links on a live Discord profile, so every statement about what is clickable is limited to what the pages say, and where they are silent we say so. Confirm labels in the app. The Custom Profiles page showed an update stamp of "6 months ago" and the Connections page "2 years ago."

- [Custom Profiles](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4403147417623-Custom-Profiles) (Discord Support): Profiles tab path, About Me contents, the 190-character limit, View Full Profile preview.
- [Markdown Text 101 (Chat Formatting: Bold, Italic, Underline)](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/210298617-Markdown-Text-101-Chat-Formatting-Bold-Italic-Underline) (Discord Support): masked link syntax, described for chat.
- [Connections & Linked Roles: Community Members](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/8063233404823-Connections-Linked-Roles-Community-Members) (Discord Support): Connections tab, visibility toggles, beta-server note, Instagram removal.
- [Per-Server Profiles](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409388345495-Per-Server-Profiles) (Discord Support): per-server About Me and its Nitro requirement.

We could not verify, and so left out: whether a plain URL or a masked link is clickable in About Me, which markdown syntax works there, whether the popout and full profile differ, how mobile behaves, and whether Discord warns people before they leave. TrackMedia's behavior comes from our product code, read the same day.
