# How to calculate engagement rate: formulas

Engagement rate is engagements divided by reach, impressions, views or followers, times 100. Pick one divisor, use it every time, and compare your own posts.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-31*

To calculate engagement rate, add up the engagements on a post (likes, comments, shares and, on some networks, saves and clicks), divide by the number of people or views you are measuring against (reach, impressions, views or followers), and multiply by 100. There is no single official formula, because each network defines both parts differently.

This guide uses the analytics help pages of X, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, read on October 22, 2026, to show what each network counts. It gives the four common formulas, a worked example, how to measure engagement on Instagram and Facebook, and how TrackMedia calculates the rate for each network. A calculator isn't needed: the sums are short enough to do in a spreadsheet cell.

## The engagement rate formula

The general formula is:

**Engagement rate (%) = engagements ÷ audience measure × 100**

"Engagements" is the number of actions people took on the post. The "audience measure" is the number you divide by. The four common choices are below. Use the same one every time, or your numbers will not compare.

![Four ways to calculate engagement rate. By reach: engagements divided by the number of people who saw the post. By impressions: engagements divided by the times the post was shown. By views: engagements divided by video views. By followers: engagements divided by follower count. Worked example with 50 engagements: 2.5 percent of 2,000 reach, 1.25 percent of 4,000 impressions, 5 percent of 1,000 followers.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/how-to-calculate-engagement-rate-fig1.svg)

*Four divisors for the same 50 engagements, and the rate each one gives. The numbers are an invented example.*

| Divide by | Formula | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reach | engagements ÷ reach × 100 | How well a post held the people who saw it |
| Impressions | engagements ÷ impressions × 100 | Networks that report impressions (X, LinkedIn, Pinterest) |
| Views | engagements ÷ views × 100 | Video-first networks (TikTok, YouTube, Threads) |
| Followers | engagements ÷ followers × 100 | Comparing accounts, or when reach is not available |

Reach counts each person once. Impressions and views can count the same person more than once. Meta's Page insights help describes reach as a metric that is estimated and counted once when it comes from both organic and paid distribution, which is one reason a post can have more impressions than reach.

## A worked example

These numbers are made up to show the sums. A post gets 30 likes, 8 comments and 12 shares, which is 50 engagements. It reached 2,000 people, was shown 4,000 times, and your account has 1,000 followers.

- By reach: 50 ÷ 2,000 × 100 = **2.5%**
- By impressions: 50 ÷ 4,000 × 100 = **1.25%**
- By followers: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = **5%**

Same post, three answers. None is wrong. That is why "my engagement rate is 5%" tells you nothing until you say what it was divided by.

## What each network counts as engagement

Networks do not agree on the list of actions. Here is what their help pages say:

| Network | What the help page counts | Rate it defines |
| --- | --- | --- |
| X | "Total number of times someone interacted with a post": clicks anywhere on the post, including reposts, replies, follows, likes, links, embedded media, username, profile photo or post expansion | Engagement rate: engagements divided by impressions |
| LinkedIn Page | Interactions: clicks, reactions, comments and shares | Engagement rate: interactions per impressions |
| Facebook Page | Engagement: the number of reactions, comments, shares and clicks on your posts | No rate defined; use reach or followers |
| Instagram | Interactions: the number of actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares | No rate defined; use viewers or followers |

X's definition is the widest, because it counts any click on the post, plus follows. LinkedIn's counts clicks but not follows. Facebook's page counts clicks too. Instagram's lists likes, comments, saves and shares. So the same post can show a different rate on each network even before you decide what to divide by.

## How to calculate engagement rate on Instagram

Instagram's insights show **Views**, **Viewers** and **Interactions**, and the Meta Business Help Centre defines them. Views is the number of times content was played or displayed. Viewers is the number of unique accounts that have seen it on screen at least once. Interactions is the number of actions people take, such as likes, comments, saves and shares.

Instagram does not publish an engagement rate formula, so you build one:

1. Open the post, reel or carousel and tap **View insights**.
2. Note **Interactions** and **Viewers**.
3. Divide interactions by viewers and multiply by 100.

Viewers is the nearest thing to reach, and Instagram marks it as estimated and in development. If you prefer a follower-based rate, divide by your follower count on the day. For what each Instagram number means, see our guide to [what Instagram insights mean](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/what-do-instagram-insights-mean).

## What does engagement mean on Facebook?

On a Facebook Page, the Meta Business Help Centre defines **Engagement** as the number of reactions, comments, shares and clicks on your posts. It defines **Reach** as the count of people who saw your content from organic or paid distribution, counted once, and marks it as an estimate.

So a Facebook engagement rate by reach is (reactions + comments + shares + clicks) ÷ reach × 100. If you want to leave clicks out, say so, and keep doing it.

## How to measure social media engagement across networks

When you post to several networks, three habits keep the numbers honest:

- **Compare like with like.** Compare a LinkedIn post to your other LinkedIn posts, not to an Instagram reel.
- **Write down the formula.** "Engagements = likes + comments + shares; divisor = reach."
- **Add the metric that engagement misses.** A like is not a visit. Pair the rate with clicks on a tracked link to see who acted on it. Our post on [what CTR is](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/what-is-ctr) covers that side.

Our [LinkedIn analytics report template](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/linkedin-analytics-report-template) and [Instagram analytics tools](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/instagram-analytics-tools) guides show how to put the numbers in a report.

## Common mistakes

- **Changing the divisor.** A rate by reach this month and by followers next month cannot be compared.
- **Comparing networks directly.** X counts any click and follow, LinkedIn counts clicks but not follows, so a 3% on one is not a 3% on the other.
- **Measuring too early.** Reach and impressions keep rising after a post goes out, and some networks delay metrics. LinkedIn's help page says some metrics can take up to 48 hours to appear.
- **Ignoring the size of the audience.** A rate on 20 impressions can swing wildly. Look at medians over many posts.

## What is a good engagement rate?

None of the help pages above give a benchmark, and we found no network that publishes an average for organic posts. The useful comparison is your own history: your median rate for each network and post type, and the posts that beat it.

## How TrackMedia calculates engagement rate

TrackMedia pulls each network's post metrics into one analytics view, including posts you did not publish with TrackMedia, and calculates an engagement rate for each post where the network supplies the numbers. It uses the divisor that network reports, and caps the result at 100%.

| Network | Engagements counted | Divided by |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | Total interactions (likes and comments if that is not reported) | Reach |
| Facebook | Likes, comments, shares | Reach |
| X | Likes, comments, shares | Impressions |
| LinkedIn | Likes, comments, shares, clicks | Impressions |
| Pinterest | Saves, clicks | Impressions |
| TikTok, Threads | Likes, comments, shares | Views |
| YouTube | Likes, comments | Views |

When one post goes to several networks, the Posts list shows one combined rate, weighted by how many people each network reached. Rates from different networks use different counts, so read them next to each other with care.

TrackMedia's "Best times" view averages the engagement rate of your own posts in each time slot, so you can see which slots tend to do better for you. Add tracked links with UTM tags, and you also see clicks, visitors and referrers per post and per network, which is the part likes cannot show. See [how TrackMedia analytics work](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics), or [start free](https://go.trackmedia.app/signup): 15 posts a month, no card.

## Questions people also ask

### How do you calculate engagement rate on a post?

Add the engagements (likes, comments, shares, and saves or clicks if you count them), divide by reach, impressions, views or followers, and multiply by 100.

### Should I divide by followers or by reach?

Reach tells you how well a post held the people who saw it. Followers is useful when you have no reach number or want to compare accounts. Pick one and stay with it.

### Is engagement rate the same as CTR?

No. CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Engagement rate counts several actions. See [what CTR is](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/what-is-ctr).

### How do I measure social media engagement?

Pick the actions that matter, a divisor, and a time period, write them down, and track the same numbers each month.

### What does engagement mean on Facebook?

Meta's Page insights define it as the number of reactions, comments, shares and clicks on your posts.
