# How to grow followers on Instagram organically

To grow followers on Instagram organically, post original content people save and share, use Reels and Collabs to reach non-followers, and post consistently.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-23*

To grow followers on Instagram organically, post original content that people like, save, comment on and share, use formats that reach people who do not follow you yet (Reels, Collabs, Search), and keep posting on a steady schedule. Instagram's own guidance says that engagement signals decide what it recommends, and that reposted content is less likely to be recommended.

This guide is built from Instagram's published explanations: [Instagram Ranking Explained](https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/instagram-ranking-explained) by Adam Mosseri (May 31, 2023) and the [Tips for Improving Your Reach](https://creators.instagram.com/blog/tips-for-improving-your-reach) post on Instagram for Creators, both read on October 22, 2026. Instagram does not publish a follower-growth formula or any weights, so this guide does not either. It shows what Instagram says it looks at, then turns that into a plan you can run.

## How does Instagram decide who sees your posts?

Instagram says it does not have a single algorithm. In Mosseri's words, each part of the app (Feed, Stories, Explore, Reels, Search) uses its own algorithm tailored to how people use it. That matters because growth mostly comes from the parts that show your content to people who do not follow you.

![Table of Instagram surfaces and what Instagram says it predicts for each: Feed looks at time spent, comments, likes, shares and profile taps; Stories at viewing history, engagement and closeness; Explore at likes, saves and shares; Reels at reshares, watching to the end, likes and the audio page.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/how-to-grow-followers-on-instagram-organically-fig1.svg)

*What Instagram says each surface predicts, from its Instagram Ranking Explained post (May 31, 2023).*

- **Feed** mixes posts from accounts a person follows with recommended posts and ads. The five interactions Instagram says it looks at most closely are how likely a person is to spend a few seconds on a post, comment, like, share, and tap the profile photo.
- **Stories** are from accounts a person follows. Signals include viewing history, engagement history and closeness.
- **Explore** is mostly made of recommendations from accounts a person does not follow. Instagram says the most important actions it predicts are likes, saves and shares, and that how many and how quickly others like, comment, share and save a post matters much more in Explore than in Feed or Stories.
- **Reels** are mostly from accounts a person does not follow. The most important predictions are whether the person will reshare, watch all the way through, like, or go to the audio page.

The takeaway is plain: Explore and Reels are where non-followers meet you, and the signals there are saves, shares, likes and watching to the end. ## Post original content, not reposts

Instagram's creator tips say to create content you made yourself or content that has not been posted on Instagram before. They add that Instagram is less likely to recommend reposts of a Reel that is already on Instagram, content with noticeable watermarks, or accounts that regularly collect and reshare others' content. Their suggested alternative is the Remix tool, to add your own spin to a popular Reel.

The ranking post also lists the Reels it aims to make less visible: low-resolution or watermarked Reels, muted Reels or ones with borders, Reels that are mostly text, and Reels already posted on Instagram. If you reuse a video you made for another app, export it without that app's watermark.

## Use the formats that reach non-followers

### Reels

Instagram's creator tips say that to be recommended, Reels must be 3 minutes or less. Because Reels are mostly from accounts viewers do not follow, they are the main way a new account can be found. Make the first seconds clear, and give people a reason to watch to the end, since that is one of the predictions Instagram names. Our guide to [posting Reels on Instagram](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-post-reels-on-instagram) has the steps.

### Collabs and tags

The same page says that if you work with another creator, you can use the Collabs feature to create a single post shared to both of your followers, or use Enhanced Tags. It says such posts can be recommended in places like the Reels tab, Explore and Feed. A Collab puts your post in front of another audience for the cost of one invitation.

### Search

Followers and non-followers can find you by searching on Instagram. Instagram's advice is to include relevant keywords in your content, caption, bio and hashtags. Put the words a person would type in your name and bio, not only your brand. Our guide to [writing an Instagram bio](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-write-an-instagram-bio) covers that.

### Favorites

Instagram says viewers can add accounts to a Favorites list, and new posts from Favorites appear higher in their Feed. Its tip is to encourage your top fans to add you. A line in a caption such as "Add me to your Favorites if you do not want to miss these" is a plain way to ask.

## What should you post?

Instagram's ranking notes describe signals, not topics, so what to post comes from your own results. A simple loop works for any niche:

1. **Pick two or three content types** you can make again and again, such as a how-to carousel, a short Reel and a photo with a story.
2. **Make each post worth saving or sending.** Saves and shares are named by Instagram as key Explore signals. A checklist, a template or a clear step-by-step gives someone a reason to do both.
3. **Ask for one action per post.** A question for comments, "save this" or "send this to a friend."
4. **Reply to comments early.** Instagram counts commenting as an interaction, and answering gives people a reason to come back.
5. **Review once a week** and make more of what worked.

Hashtags help Search and are covered for Reels in our [hashtags for Instagram Reels](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/hashtags-for-instagram-reels) guide.

## How often should you post, and when?

Instagram's pages do not give a number of posts per day or week that grows an account, and neither does this guide. What they do say is that Feed tries to avoid showing too many posts from the same person in a row. That is a reason to pick a rhythm you can sustain rather than posting many times in one day and then nothing for two weeks.

Choose a pace you can keep for three months, such as three posts a week, and hold to it. For timing, use your own data; our post on the [best day to post on Instagram](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/best-day-to-post-on-instagram) explains how to read it, and our [Instagram content calendar](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/instagram-content-calendar) guide shows how to plan a month.

## Read your insights to see what is working

The Instagram creator tips say to monitor your insights and look for patterns, and point to one view in particular: you can break down Accounts Reached by followers and non-followers, to see how much of your reach comes from people who do not already follow you, and track that over time. That single split tells you whether your content is reaching new people at all.

The same page suggests checking **Account Status** to see whether your account or content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers. If it is not, it shows which content may violate Community Guidelines or Recommendation Guidelines, and you can edit or delete it or request a review.

For a post-level check, Instagram's help page says to tap Profile, tap the post and tap **View Insights** on iPhone. It lists Views, Interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) and Profile activity.

## What slows organic growth down?

- **Reposted or watermarked content.** Instagram says it is less likely to recommend it.
- **Content that breaks the Recommendation Guidelines.** Instagram says it can still go to followers in Feed and Stories but is not recommended to non-followers in Explore, Search, Reels and other places. Content that breaks the Community Guidelines is removed, and repeating it can get an account disabled.
- **Posting in bursts.** Irregular posting gives you less to learn from and fewer chances to be found.
- **Tools that act like a person.** If Instagram shows a "we suspect automated behavior" message, our guide to the [message](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/instagram-we-suspect-automated-behavior) explains what to do.

## Grow your Instagram account with TrackMedia

TrackMedia does not grow followers for you. It handles the two jobs that compound: posting consistently, and learning from results.

- **Consistency.** Plan posts on a calendar and set posting queues, then fill queue slots from a content collection so a gap in your week does not become a gap in your feed. The composer fits one post to Instagram and to the other 20 networks, with checks before it goes out.
- **Reading what worked.** Per-post analytics show views, reach, likes, comments, saves and shares, including for posts you did not publish with TrackMedia. You can compare formats and see which kind of post earns the saves Instagram weighs.
- **Best times from your own posts.** The Best times view reads your own history rather than an industry average.
- **Where visitors go next.** Tracked links with UTM tags show clicks, visitors and referrers, so you can tell which posts send people to your site or offer.

Try a Collab with another creator in your niche, since Instagram says Collab posts can be recommended in Reels, Explore and Feed. Then review which posts earned the most saves and shares and repeat that format.

### Does Instagram share a growth formula?

No. Instagram says it uses thousands of signals and describes the most important ones in rough order, but it does not publish weights.
