# How to repost on X: Repost, Quote and undo

To repost on X, tap the Repost icon under a post, then Repost. Choose Repost as Quote to add a comment, and tap the highlighted icon to undo it.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

To repost on X, tap (or click on the web) the Repost icon on a post, then choose **Repost**. X's Help Center says the post is then shared with all of your followers, and that **Repost as Quote** lets you add your own comment first.

This guide uses X's [How to Repost](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-repost) and [Repost FAQs](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/repost-faqs) pages, read on October 6, 2026, including the iOS, Android and Desktop tabs. It also covers undoing a Repost, protected accounts, limits, and why TrackMedia cannot publish a Repost for you.

## How to repost on X on iOS, Android and the web

The steps are the same on iOS and Android, and nearly the same on the web. X's How to Repost page gives these steps for the iOS and Android tabs:

1. **Find the post** you want to share.
2. **Tap the Repost icon** on it.
3. **Tap Repost** in the pop-up.

The page says the post is then shared with all of your followers as a Repost. On the Desktop tab, you click the Repost button, a pop-up shows the post you are about to Repost, and you click the Repost button again.

X's page says you can Repost posts from other users or your own older posts, for example to resurface one that is relevant again.

## What is the difference between a Repost and a Quote?

A Repost shares the original post unchanged. A Quote shares it with your own comment on top, and X's page says you can also add media: one GIF, up to four photos, or a video.

Quote: adds your comment and one GIF, up to four photos or a video; delete from the post menu on your profile; TrackMedia cannot publish it.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/how-to-repost-on-x-fig1.svg)

*Repost versus Quote, using the labels on X's How to Repost page, plus what TrackMedia's X connector can publish.*

To quote, X's page gives these steps for iOS and Android:

1. **Go to the post** you want to share.
2. **Tap the Repost icon**, then **Repost as Quote**.
3. **Add your own comment**, and media if you want it.
4. **Tap Repost.** The post is shared with your followers as a Quote.

On the Desktop tab the last step reads "Click the Repost button." Two details from the same page are worth knowing. The original post inside your Quote does not count toward the character limit, which our [guide to X's character limit](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/twitter-character-limit) covers for your own text. And when someone replies to your Quote, the original author is not added to the conversation automatically, so mention their username if you want them in it.

## How to undo a Repost on X

On iOS and Android, find the Repost: the Repost icon is highlighted. Tap that icon, then tap **Undo Repost** to confirm, and X says the post is removed from your profile timeline. The Desktop tab words it as: click the highlighted Repost button and the post is removed from your profile timeline. It does not name an Undo Repost label on the web, so go by what your screen shows.

The Repost FAQs add that undoing removes the Repost from your timeline but does not delete the original post. The How to Repost page also warns that an undone Repost may still appear on mobile devices showing cached timelines, or in cross-postings to third-party sites, and gives the same warning for an undone Quote.

### How to delete a Quote

A Quote is removed differently, from the post menu, and the mobile apps differ:

- **iOS.** Tap your profile icon in the top menu, find the Quote, tap the icon at the top of the post, tap **Delete Post**, then **Delete** to confirm.
- **Android.** Tap whichever you see in the top menu, the navigation menu icon or your profile icon. Tap **Profile**, find the Quote, tap the icon at the top of the post, tap **Delete**, then **Yes** to confirm.
- **Desktop.** Go to your profile, find the Quote, click the icon on it, click **Delete Post**, then **Delete** to confirm.

## What does a Repost look like, and where does it show up?

The Repost FAQs say a Repost looks like a normal post with the author's name and username, marked by the Repost icon and the name of the person who reposted it. People you follow who repost or quote appear in your Home timeline, and posts from accounts you have blocked do not show up.

For your own posts that others shared, open your Notifications tab. The post detail page shows how many Reposts and how many Quote posts there are, with separate **Reposts** and **Quote posts** tabs listing who did it.

A Repost can vanish without you undoing it. X says it is no longer available if the original post was deleted or removed, or if the original author's account was deleted or suspended.

## Why can't I repost a post on X?

The most common documented reason is a protected account. The Repost FAQs say that if you see a lock icon next to someone's name on their profile or posts, their posts are protected and you cannot Repost their content, and neither can anyone else.

The reverse is not blocked. X says that if your own posts are protected you can still Repost and Quote post, though only people you have allowed to follow you can view them.

The FAQs describe these limits:

- There is no limit to how many times a post can be reposted, but X shows only the most recent 100 people who reposted a public post.
- Reposts count toward your limit of 1,000 posts per day.

## Can TrackMedia repost on X?

No. TrackMedia schedules and publishes new posts to X, and it has no way to Repost or Quote an existing post. We read the code of TrackMedia's X connector on October 6, 2026: its only publish call creates a post from text and media (a thread is sent as a chain of replies), and it has no repost or quote field.

X's API reference documents a [Repost Post](https://docs.x.com/x-api/users/repost-post) endpoint, described as causing the authenticated user to repost a specific post by its ID. TrackMedia's connector does not call it, and the web composer has no Repost option. We did not check what X plan or access that endpoint requires, so we make no claim about why TrackMedia lacks it.

That leaves a few practical consequences:

- **Do it on X.** To share someone else's post, or to bring one of your own older posts back in front of followers, use the Repost icon in X itself.
- **Re-posting the same text may fail.** TrackMedia's connector turns X's "duplicate content" error into a message that X rejected the post as a duplicate of a recent post. X's pages we read do not say how recent, so we cannot give a time window.
- **A link is not a Repost.** You can put a link to someone's post in a scheduled post, but that is a new post, not X's Repost feature.
- **Analytics count them.** For X posts that TrackMedia tracks, the shares figure is X's repost count plus its quote count, labeled Reposts. See [TrackMedia analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics).

Our [guide to scheduling and editing posts on X](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-schedule-and-edit-posts-on-x) has a short Repost section too. It says X's pages do not say whether a Repost can be scheduled, and we still found nothing that does. For Instagram, where reposting works differently, see [how to repost a Reel on Instagram](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-repost-a-reel-on-instagram).

To schedule your original X posts and keep them in one queue, see [how publishing works in TrackMedia](https://www.trackmedia.app/#publish), or [start free with TrackMedia](https://go.trackmedia.app/signup).

## How we checked this

We opened each page below in a browser on October 6, 2026. For the How to Repost page we clicked the iOS, Android and Desktop tab in every section (Repost, undo, Quote, delete a Quote) and copied the labels. TrackMedia's behavior comes from reading its X connector code the same day. X changes these pages, so check the live page if a label looks different.

- [How to Repost](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-repost) (X Help Center): steps and device differences for Repost, undo, Quote and delete a Quote, the cached-timeline note, the Quote character-limit note.
- [Repost FAQs](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/repost-faqs) (X Help Center): what a Repost looks like, where it appears, protected accounts, the 100-person display limit, the 1,000 posts per day count, third-party apps, "RT".
- [Repost Post](https://docs.x.com/x-api/users/repost-post) (X API reference, docs.x.com): the endpoint exists and reposts a post by ID for the authenticated user.

What we could not verify: we did not test reposting on a live X account. We did not confirm whether any of this needs X Premium (the pages we read state no such requirement), whether a Quote counts toward the 1,000 posts per day figure (the FAQ says it for Reposts), or how recent a post must be for X to treat a repeat as a duplicate. We also could not confirm whether a Repost can be scheduled, because X's pages do not say, or what X plan or access the Repost Post endpoint requires.
