# Instagram Reel vs Story vs Post: Differences

Reels run up to 20 minutes on one Instagram page and 3 on another, Stories last 24 hours, carousels hold 20 items. Differences and a decision table.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

The main Instagram reel vs story difference is lifespan and length: a Story leaves your profile, Feed and Direct after 24 hours and splits video into clips at 60 seconds, while a Reel can run up to 20 minutes according to Instagram's Help Center article (another Instagram page says 3 minutes, explained below). A feed post, including a multi-photo carousel, is the third format: up to 20 photos and videos in one swipeable post.

Reel vs post comes down to what you are making: a video that plays in the Reels viewer, or a photo set that lives in your Feed and profile grid. Everything below comes from Instagram's Help Center and About pages, read on October 6, 2026, and says so where Instagram is silent.

## How do Reels, Stories and posts differ at a glance?

Here are the documented limits and lifespans, as of October 6, 2026. Where a page gave no number, the cell says so.

| Format | Length or size | Lifespan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reel | Up to 20 minutes per the Help Center article; other Instagram pages say 3 | No expiry on the pages we read |
| Story | Video up to 60 seconds is one clip; longer is split into clips | 24 hours; shared Stories are saved to your Stories Archive |
| Post (carousel) | Up to 20 photos and videos | No expiry on the pages we read |

## How long can each one be, and how long does it last?

For length, Instagram's Help Center article [Record a reel on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/2720958398006062) says you can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes with Reels, as one clip or several that add up to 20 minutes. It also says "Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences." One wrinkle: the Help Center's search results describe that same article as "Record and edit videos up to 3 minutes with Instagram Reels", and Instagram's [About page for Reels](https://about.instagram.com/features/reels) says "Create multi-clip videos up to 3 minutes", so Instagram's own pages disagree. We could not find which is newer, so we list the Help Center article's 20 minutes first and flag the conflict. Our [Reel length, size and aspect ratio guide](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-long-can-an-instagram-reel-be) compares the numbers in detail.

For Stories, [Share a photo or video to your Instagram story](https://help.instagram.com/1257341144298972) (iPhone version) says a video up to 60 seconds long appears as one clip, and longer videos are broken into multiple clips. For carousels, [Share a post with multiple photos or videos](https://help.instagram.com/269314186824048) says up to 20 photos and videos in a single post. We found no per-video length limit for feed posts, so we give none.

For lifespan, [How long Instagram stories remain visible](https://help.instagram.com/1729008150678239) says Story photos and videos disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours, unless you add them as a highlight. Stories you share are saved to your Stories Archive, which you can turn off in Settings. None of the Reel or post pages we read gives those formats an expiry, and Instagram's [Edit and Delete Your Posts](https://help.instagram.com/997924900322403) page lists deleting as the way to remove a post.

## Where does each one appear, and who can see it?

A Story appears as a ring around your profile picture, at the top of your followers' Feeds, in Feed next to posts you share, and in Direct inbox. Instagram's page [Where your Instagram story appears](https://help.instagram.com/636136463228627) says Story photos and videos do not appear on your profile grid. If your account is public, a Story may also appear in Search & Explore.

A Reel follows your account's privacy settings, according to [Who can see and share your reels on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/1392551434468488). For public accounts, anyone can see and share it, and people may see it in Feed, the Reels viewer, Explore, and audio, effect and hashtag pages. For private accounts, only approved followers can see and share it. The same page says a reel you share appears in the Reels section of your profile.

A carousel post shows its first photo or video in your Feed and on your profile, with a swipe for the rest, per the carousel page above. The page adds that videos in carousels "are not considered reels" and do not show in the Reels tab or get reels features. The pages we read did not describe a separate audience rule for feed posts, so we cannot give one.

## How do insights differ for Reels, Stories and posts?

Each format has its own Help Center page for insights, and the metric lists differ. Per those pages, all three need a public personal or professional account, and the lists below are copied from them.

- **Reels:** [View insights on your Instagram reels](https://help.instagram.com/202865988324236) lists Views, Watch time, Viewers, Average watch time and Follows. Insights are kept for up to two years, for reels posted on and after May 14, 2021.
- **Stories:** [View insights on your Instagram Stories](https://help.instagram.com/383939598845756) lists Views, Viewers, Interactions, Accounts engaged and Profile activity. Stories expire after 24 hours, but you can see their insights for up to two years, and expired Stories themselves are not viewable.
- **Posts:** [View insights on your Instagram posts](https://help.instagram.com/553860108359435) lists Views, Interactions and Profile activity, kept for up to two years.

Be careful comparing numbers across formats. The Reels insights page defines Views as the number of times a reel "starts to play or replay", while [See info about your reel](https://help.instagram.com/323823612324730) says the play count on your Reels tab "doesn't include replays". The Help Center also marks Viewers as an estimated metric still in development. For what each metric means, see our guide to [what Instagram insights mean](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/what-do-instagram-insights-mean).

## Which should you choose: Reel, Story or post?

Instagram does not publish a ranking of which format performs best, so this table maps goals to what the documentation says each format does. It is a decision aid, not a performance claim.

| If you want to... | Choose | Why, per Instagram's pages |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Publish one video longer than 60 seconds | Reel | A Story splits longer video into clips; a Reel runs up to 20 minutes |
| Share something temporary | Story | It disappears after 24 hours unless you add it as a highlight |
| Keep it off your profile grid | Story | Story media does not appear on the grid |
| Share a set of photos or videos people swipe through | Carousel post | Up to 20 items in one post |
| Study watch time | Reel | Of the three insights pages, only the Reels page lists Watch time and Average watch time |
| Study taps on stickers and links | Story | Story Interactions include sticker taps and link taps |
| Schedule from the Instagram app | Reel or post | The scheduling page lists reels, photos and carousel posts, not Stories |

Scheduling details, including the 25-posts-a-day and 30-day limits, are on Instagram's page [How to create and manage scheduled posts and Reels](https://help.instagram.com/439971288310029), which also says you must have a public account. Our guide to [seeing scheduled posts on Instagram](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-see-scheduled-posts-on-instagram) shows where they end up, and [adding a link to an Instagram Story](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-add-link-to-instagram-story) covers Story links.

## How TrackMedia fits each format

TrackMedia's [publishing](https://www.trackmedia.app/#publish) covers feed posts: Instagram images and carousels of up to 10 items (fewer than the 20 the Instagram app allows), with the caption set in one composer next to your other networks. It does not publish Stories. A Reel can be requested through the API or a per-target override, but the web composer has no Reel option.

For measurement, TrackMedia's [analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics) shows views, likes, comments and shares per network where the platform supplies them, including for posts you published outside TrackMedia. It does not recreate Instagram's per-format metrics such as watch time, so use Instagram's own insights for those. If you want one place to plan feed posts across networks, you can [start free with TrackMedia](https://go.trackmedia.app/signup).

## How we checked this

We opened each page below in a browser on October 6, 2026 and copied the numbers and menu wording from it. Device-specific pages were read in their iPhone app version. We did not test the formats on a live account, and Instagram changes its pages, so check the live page if a number matters.

- [Record a reel on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/2720958398006062) (Instagram Help Center): 20-minute length, 3-minute recommendation note, and the search summary's 3-minute figure.

- [How to create and manage scheduled posts and Reels on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/439971288310029) (Instagram Help Center): what can be scheduled, limits.

We could not verify a per-video length limit for feed posts, who can see feed posts for each account type, or any Instagram claim about which format reaches more people, so we make none. We also did not confirm why the Help Center's Reel length figure differs between the article and its search summary. TrackMedia's behavior comes from our own product and Instagram connector code, read the same day.
