# Instagram story analytics: where to find them

Instagram story analytics sit in Insights for up to two years, but viewer names last 48 hours and API data 24. Here is where to look and what each limit means.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

Instagram story analytics live in Instagram's Insights, and Instagram's Help Center says you can open them for up to two years after a story was posted, even though the story itself disappears after 24 hours. The limits that catch people out are shorter: the list of usernames who viewed a story lasts up to 48 hours, and Meta's API returns story metrics for only 24 hours.

This guide covers where to find story insights on your phone, on a computer and in Meta Business Suite, what Instagram lists for Stories, and what a third-party tool can and cannot read. Metric definitions are already covered in [what the insights on Instagram mean](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/what-do-instagram-insights-mean), so this post stays on Stories. Everything was read on October 6, 2026.

## Where do you find Instagram story analytics?

Instagram's help page [View insights on your Instagram Stories](https://help.instagram.com/383939598845756) gives different steps for a story that is live and for one that has expired. It says you need a public (personal or professional) account to view insights. Other Instagram pages describe the account requirement differently, which our insights guide, linked in the introduction, covers.

### On your phone

These steps are from the iPhone view of that page. We did not open the Android view.

1. **For a live story:** tap your profile picture at the top of your feed or profile to open your story, tap **Activity**, then tap **Insights**.
2. **For an older story:** tap **Profile** or your profile picture in the bottom right, then tap **More** to reach Settings and activity.
3. **Open the dashboard:** with a professional account, tap **Insights** below **For professionals**. With a personal account, tap **Your dashboard** below **Your insights and tools**.
4. **Pick the story:** tap **Content you shared**, then tap the story you want.

The page adds that reported numbers may be delayed as they populate, so a story's numbers can keep changing after it ends.

### On a computer

The computer view of the same page says to click your profile picture on the left to open your profile, click **Options** at the top right of the story, and click **View insights**. For past stories, click **View insights** on your profile and find the story below **Top content based on engagement**.

### In Meta Business Suite

Meta's page [Create and manage stories in Meta Business Suite](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/972600925713914) says to click **Content** in the left-hand menu, then the **Stories** tab, and choose **Active**, **Scheduled** or **Archived**. To view insights, click the published or archived story. The page does not list the metrics, so we can't say how they map to the in-app names.

## What story metrics does Instagram list?

Instagram's story insights page lists five metrics, each with a one-line definition:

- **Views:** the number of times your story was played or displayed.
- **Viewers:** unique accounts that saw your story at least once.
- **Interactions:** actions like replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement metrics.
- **Accounts engaged:** unique accounts that interacted with your story, for example by replying, sharing or tapping stickers.
- **Profile activity:** actions taken from your story, such as profile visits, follows or website clicks.

Instagram's [About Instagram insights](https://help.instagram.com/788388387972460) page adds that for posts, stories and Instagram Live you can split Accounts engaged into followers and non-followers. It marks Viewers and Accounts engaged as estimated and in development.

The story insights page does not describe a per-sticker or per-link breakdown. Link taps are folded into Interactions, so if you want a count for one specific link, see [how to see who clicked your Instagram link](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-see-who-clicked-your-instagram-link) and [how to add a link to an Instagram Story](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-add-link-to-instagram-story).

## How long can you see Instagram story insights?

You can see them for up to two years, according to the story insights page, but three other clocks run alongside that one. The figure below puts them on one timeline.

![Timeline, not to scale, of four lanes starting at the moment a story is posted. The story is visible for 24 hours. Story metrics and the story list through Meta's API last 24 hours. The viewer username list lasts up to 48 hours. Story insights in the Instagram app last up to two years.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/instagram-story-analytics-fig1.svg)

*How long each kind of story data is available, per Instagram's Help Center and Meta for Developers. The axis is not to scale.*

- **The story itself: 24 hours.** Instagram's page [How long Instagram stories remain visible](https://help.instagram.com/1729008150678239) says stories disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours unless you add them as a highlight.
- **Viewer usernames: up to 48 hours.** [How to tell who's seen your Instagram story](https://help.instagram.com/202055156863605) says you can see who viewed it up to 48 hours after you post, by swiping up. After the first 24 hours, open your profile, tap **Menu**, tap **Archive** below **How you use Instagram**, open the story and swipe up. The view count includes replays, so it can exceed the number of usernames.
- **Insights numbers: up to two years.** The story insights page says that although stories expire after 24 hours, you can access insights for up to two years after they are created, and that expired stories themselves are not viewable.

## What are the API limits for Instagram story analytics?

Meta's API returns story metrics for only 24 hours, so a tool that reads stories through it should collect them while the story is live. Meta's [Instagram Media Insights reference](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/reference/instagram-media/insights) (updated September 11, 2026) lists these limits:

- **24-hour window.** "Story media metrics are only available for 24 hours." Meta adds that you may receive data after expiry if the story is added to a highlight, and that results can differ between API calls, webhook notifications and the app. The same page also says, for all media, "Metrics data is stored for up to 2 years." It does not explain how that fits with the 24-hour story line, so we treat the story line as the limit that applies to Stories.
- **Webhook.** To get insights before they expire, Meta says to subscribe to the `story_insights` webhook field. Meta's [Instagram Platform insights](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/insights) guide says that field is available only for Instagram API with Facebook Login, and the media reference says the insights webhook is not supported for Instagram API with Instagram Login.
- **Small stories.** Story metrics with values under 5 return error code 10, "Not enough viewers for the media to show insights".
- **Replies.** For stories created by users in Europe and Japan, the `replies` metric returns 0.
- **Delay.** Data used to calculate metrics can be delayed by up to 48 hours.

Meta's [Stories reference](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/instagram-graph-api/reference/ig-user/stories) adds that the stories list is available for 24 hours, does not include Live video stories, and does not return new stories created when someone reshares a story. The general media list does not include stories: Meta's [IG User Media reference](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/instagram-graph-api/reference/ig-user/media) says to use the `/stories` endpoint instead.

The API also has story-only metrics. The media reference lists `navigation`, the total of actions taken from a story, with breakdowns for tap forward, tap back, tap exit and swipe forward ("next story"). It also lists `link_clicks`, the number of taps on links in your story. The Help Center does not list either by those names.

## Does TrackMedia show Instagram story analytics?

No. TrackMedia does not read story insights, and it does not publish Stories either. Its Instagram connector lists your posts through the media endpoint, which Meta says does not return stories, and nothing in the connector code calls the stories endpoint. Story numbers will not appear in [TrackMedia's analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics).

What TrackMedia does read for feed posts is listed in the insights guide linked earlier, and [how to automate Instagram posts](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-automate-instagram-posts) explains how its Instagram publishing works. For Stories, use Instagram's own Insights or Meta Business Suite.

If you want your posts across networks in one place, you can [start free with TrackMedia](https://go.trackmedia.app/signup).

## How we checked this

We opened each page below in a browser on October 6, 2026 and copied the menu names, numbers and definitions from it. Instagram's Help Center changes its content by device. We read the story insights page in both the computer and iPhone views, the viewer list and visibility pages in the iPhone view, and the overview page in the computer view. We did not open Insights on a live account, test an Android phone, or call the API.
