# Third-party vs native TikTok analytics

TikTok Studio shows retention and audience data. Tools see only what TikTok's APIs return, and TikTok has two: a basic one and one behind an application.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

In the third-party vs native TikTok analytics question, native TikTok Studio is the full view, and a third-party tool sees only what TikTok's APIs return. TikTok's Display API documents four counts per video (views, likes, comments and shares) plus a few account totals. A separate Accounts API, part of TikTok API for Business, documents watch-time, reach and audience fields, but it sits behind an access application.

This guide compares TikTok's own documentation for each route, read on October 6, 2026: the Creator Academy and Help Center for Studio, TikTok for Developers for the Display, Content Posting and Research APIs, and TikTok API for Business for the Accounts API. To find Studio itself, see our guide on [how to check analytics on TikTok](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-check-tiktok-analytics).

## What is the difference between native and third-party TikTok analytics?

Native analytics means TikTok Studio, which TikTok builds for the account owner. A third-party tool is a separate product you authorize through TikTok's login, and it can only read what TikTok's API chooses to hand over. The figure and table below show where that line falls, based on the pages we read.

![Three columns comparing where TikTok numbers live. TikTok Studio lists views, likes, comments, shares, retention rate, average watch time, watched full video, traffic source, predicted viewer demographics, most active times and LIVE analytics. The Display API lists view_count, like_count, comment_count, share_count, title, description, duration, create_time and share_url, plus the account counts follower_count, following_count, likes_count and video_count, with no field listed for retention, watch time, traffic source or demographics. The Accounts API, part of TikTok API for Business, lists per-video video_views, likes, comments, shares, reach, full_video_watched_rate, total_time_watched, average_time_watched, impression_sources and audience_countries, and account-level audience_countries, audience_genders and audience_activity, behind an access application.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/native-vs-third-party-tiktok-analytics-fig1.svg)

*Where each kind of TikTok number can be read, based on TikTok's Creator Academy, TikTok for Developers and TikTok API for Business documentation.*

| Number | Display API fields | Accounts API fields |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Views, likes, comments, shares | `view_count`, `like_count`, `comment_count`, `share_count` | `video_views`, `likes`, `comments`, `shares` |
| Watch time and finish rate | No field listed | `total_time_watched`, `average_time_watched`, `full_video_watched_rate` |
| Reach and where views came from | No field listed | `reach`, `impression_sources` |
| Viewer location, gender, activity | No field listed | `audience_countries`, `audience_genders`, `audience_activity` |
| Retention rate, as Studio names it | No field listed | No field with that name listed |

Studio lists more than the Display API. TikTok's Creator Academy article [Introducing TikTok analytics](https://www.tiktok.com/creator-academy/en/article/tool-analytics-intro) (last updated October 1, 2026) covers retention rate, traffic source and LIVE analytics, and says viewer gender, age and location statistics "are based on predictive models rather than confirmed user data". TikTok's Help Center page on [TikTok Studio](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7581820705491229240) lists the Analytics sections: Overview, Content, Viewers and Followers for an account, and Overview, Viewers and Engagement for a video, with viewer demographics and activity times under Viewers.

The two API columns come from the next two sections. We did not open the Accounts API field definitions, only a table that names the fields, so we cannot say how each one maps to a Studio screen.

## What can third-party tools read through TikTok's Display API?

TikTok's [Display API overview](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/display-api-overview) (updated August 4, 2026) describes three endpoints for showing a creator's profile and videos: `/v2/user/info/`, `/v2/video/list/` and `/v2/video/query/`. The page frames the purpose as displaying videos and profile information, not reporting on audiences.

The [Video Object](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-object) page (updated August 24, 2026) lists every field a video call can return. The performance fields are `view_count`, `like_count`, `comment_count` and `share_count`. The rest describe the video: `id`, `create_time`, `cover_image_url`, `share_url`, `video_description`, `duration`, `height`, `width`, `title`, the embed fields and `is_aigc`. We found no field for retention, watch time, traffic source or demographics.

Three rules shape what a tool can do with those fields:

- **Public videos only, newest first.** The [List Videos](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-list) page says the endpoint returns a paginated list of the user's public posts, sorted by `create_time` descending, with a maximum of 20 per page.
- **Your own videos.** The [Query Videos](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-query) page says it verifies that the videos belong to the authorizing user, and takes up to 20 video IDs per request.
- **Permission per field group.** The [Scopes Reference](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-scopes) says `video.list` reads a user's public videos. The [Get User Info](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-get-user-info) page ties `follower_count`, `following_count`, `likes_count` and `video_count` to the `user.info.stats` scope.

The Get User Info page, updated August 4, 2026, also carries a notice that there is a migration plan related to that API. We did not follow it, so check that page if you build on follower counts.

## What does TikTok's Accounts API add?

It documents more. TikTok API for Business has an [Organic API](https://business-api.tiktok.com/portal/docs/organic-api/v1.3) made of five APIs, and its Accounts API page says you can "manage and report on Business Account and Personal Account activity programmatically". That page also says that from March 20, 2026, developers must complete the Accounts API Access Application Form before submitting a new developer app or requesting a scope increase that includes the "TikTok Accounts" permission scope.

TikTok's [Accounts Insights data latency](https://business-api.tiktok.com/portal/docs/accounts-insights-data-latency/v1.3) page names the fields. For `/business/video/list/` they include `video_views`, `likes`, `comments`, `shares`, `reach`, `video_duration`, `full_video_watched_rate`, `total_time_watched`, `average_time_watched`, `impression_sources` and `audience_countries`. For `/business/get/` they include `audience_countries`, `audience_genders`, `audience_activity`, `profile_views` and `followers_count`. The page says offline fields such as likes and `audience_countries` usually lag by 24 to 48 hours (UTC).

So the line between native and third-party is not one wall. A tool that has been approved for the Accounts API can show more than a tool that only uses the Display API. We did not verify which accounts can connect, which scopes are granted in practice, or which scheduling tools have been approved, so ask a vendor which API it uses.

## Does the Content Posting API change what a tool can see?

It changes who can see a post. The Scopes Reference lists `video.publish` for direct posting and `video.upload` for sharing a draft to the creator's account. We did not open the Content Posting API reference pages, so we cannot say whether they list analytics fields, and the pages above show none.

TikTok's [Content Sharing Guidelines](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-sharing-guidelines) (updated August 4, 2026) say content posted through an API client that has not been audited is restricted to private viewing. It also caps unaudited clients at 5 users posting in a 24-hour window. The page says audited and unaudited clients both face a posting cap, typically around 15 posts per day per creator account, shared across all clients using Direct Post. Because List Videos covers public posts, TikTok's pages do not make clear what a tool can read for a private post from an unaudited client.

## Can a marketing tool use TikTok's Research API?

Not under the eligibility rules TikTok publishes. The [Research API page](https://developers.tiktok.com/products/research-api/) says qualified researchers in eligible regions can apply to study public data. Applicants must be affiliated with an eligible academic or not-for-profit organization, be independent of commercial interests, and apply through a form. TikTok says you can typically expect an answer within 4 weeks.

The [Research API Query Videos](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/research-api-specs-query-videos) page (updated September 1, 2026) shows what the program is for: searching public videos across the platform by keyword, hashtag, region or username, with a 30-day maximum between start and end dates. It needs the `research.data.basic` scope. It is a way to study TikTok in aggregate, not a way to read your account's analytics.

## What does that mean when you compare tools?

Check which fields a tool shows and where they come from. We did not review any third-party tool, so we make no claim about how any one of them behaves. What the documentation does show is that the fields on screen reveal the route.

1. **Which fields does it show?** Only views, likes, comments and shares matches the Display API fields. Watch time, reach or audience breakdowns point to a different source, so ask the vendor whether it uses TikTok's Accounts API.
2. **Does it keep history?** A tool can add its own saved snapshots over time.
3. **Does it put TikTok next to your other networks?** Studio covers TikTok only, so this is what a tool can add that Studio cannot.

## What does TrackMedia read from TikTok?

As of October 6, 2026, TrackMedia reads the Display API fields and nothing deeper. It does not use TikTok's Accounts API. The connector asks TikTok for the `user.info.basic`, `user.info.profile`, `user.info.stats`, `video.list`, `video.publish` and `video.upload` scopes, and a code comment notes that TikTok fails a whole call if a requested field is outside the grant. Here is what the code does:

- **Per post:** views, likes, comments and shares. If TikTok leaves a count out, TrackMedia treats it as missing, not zero. It also computes an engagement rate, likes plus comments plus shares divided by views, capped at 100 percent.
- **Per account:** followers, following, lifetime likes (kept separate from per-post likes) and video count.
- **Imported posts:** it can list the account's existing videos, so posts you did not publish through TrackMedia are read too, and it re-reads them about once a day (every 20 hours).
- **When:** for a post published through TrackMedia, it takes snapshots about 1 hour, 24 hours and 7 days after publishing. An account's counts are read again once the last reading is 20 hours old, and the **Refresh** button on the [Analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics) page has a 15-minute cooldown.

On the Analytics page, TikTok's view count shows in the Impressions card, which falls back to views when a network has no impressions figure. TrackMedia does not show retention rate, average watch time, traffic sources, viewer demographics, follower activity or LIVE analytics for TikTok, because it does not request them. We have not compared its counts against TikTok Studio, so do not expect them to match to the digit.

One more limit comes from the audit rules. TrackMedia's code notes that before TikTok clears an app, posts are forced private. The video query call can then miss a just-published post, so the code falls back to one page of the video list. We do not know the audit status of TrackMedia's own TikTok app, so we make no claim either way.

## Which should you use, TikTok Studio or a tool?

Use both, for different questions. Open TikTok Studio when you need to know why a video held or lost viewers, where views came from, or who is watching. Use a tool when you want TikTok's counts beside your other networks, ranked together and saved over time, as in our guide to [managing multiple social media accounts](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-manage-multiple-social-media-accounts).

If you are scheduling TikTok posts and wondering about reach, our post on [whether scheduling a post on TikTok affects views](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/does-scheduling-a-post-on-tiktok-affect-views) covers what TikTok says. ## How we checked this

We opened each page below in a browser on October 6, 2026 and read the fields, scopes, limits and eligibility rules from it. We did not test any API call or Studio screen on a live TikTok account, and we did not compare Studio numbers with TrackMedia's. TrackMedia's own behavior comes from its TikTok connector and analytics code, read the same day.

- TikTok Creator Academy, [Introducing TikTok analytics](https://www.tiktok.com/creator-academy/en/article/tool-analytics-intro) (last updated October 1, 2026): what Studio shows, and the predictive-models quote.
- TikTok Help Center, [TikTok Studio](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7581820705491229240) (undated): the account and video Analytics sections.
- TikTok for Developers, [Display API Overview](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/display-api-overview) (updated August 4, 2026): the three endpoints and their stated purpose.
- TikTok for Developers, [Video Object](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-object) (updated August 24, 2026): full field list.
- TikTok for Developers, [List Videos](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-list) (updated August 4, 2026) and [Query Videos](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-video-query) (updated August 24, 2026): public posts, page and ID limits, ownership check.
- TikTok for Developers, [Get User Info](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/tiktok-api-v2-get-user-info) (updated August 4, 2026): account fields and scopes, plus the migration notice.

**What we could not verify:** the Accounts API field definitions, its eligibility rules beyond the access application note, and whether any scheduling tool is approved for it; the Content Posting API reference pages; the Studio items for retention rate, watch time, traffic source and LIVE, which rest on the Creator Academy article alone; what the Get User Info migration plan changes; what a tool sees for private posts from an unaudited client; whether TrackMedia's app has passed TikTok's audit; and how closely API counts match Studio's.
