# What do the insights mean on Instagram?

Views count every play, Viewers count each account once, and Interactions count actions. Here is what each Instagram Insights metric means, per Instagram.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-06*

The insights on Instagram are free analytics, and each metric has a specific meaning: **Views** counts how many times your content was played or displayed, **Viewers** counts the unique accounts that saw it, **Interactions** counts actions such as likes and saves, and **Accounts engaged** counts the unique accounts that took them. The main thing to learn is which numbers are totals and which are unique accounts.

This guide uses the definitions on Instagram's Help Center and Meta's developer documentation, read on October 6, 2026. Meta has deprecated impressions and introduced Views, so it also says which names are current and what happened to "impressions".

## What do the insights mean on Instagram, metric by metric?

Instagram's page [About Instagram insights](https://help.instagram.com/788388387972460) says the in-app overview includes Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. The table below puts each metric's definition next to whether it is a total or a count of unique accounts. Profile activity is defined on the posts and Stories pages, not on the overview page.

| Metric | What Instagram says it counts | Total or unique |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Views | Times your content was played or displayed | Total |
| Viewers | Accounts that saw your content on screen at least once | Unique accounts |
| Interactions | Actions people take, such as likes, comments, saves and shares | Total |
| Accounts engaged | Accounts that interacted with your content | Unique accounts |
| Profile activity | Actions people take on your profile after engaging with a post, or from a story | Total |
| Content you shared | How many stories, reels or posts you posted in the period you picked | Total |

![Diagram sorting Instagram Insights metrics. Totals: Views, Interactions, Watch time and Profile activity. Unique accounts: Viewers and Accounts engaged. A worked example with made-up numbers shows 100 accounts playing a Reel and 30 of them replaying it once each giving Viewers 100 and Views 130, and 20 accounts liking and 5 also commenting giving Accounts engaged 20 and Interactions 25.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/what-do-instagram-insights-mean-fig1.svg)

*Totals versus unique accounts. The example numbers are invented to show the difference and do not come from Instagram.*

Instagram marks several of these as estimated. The same page says Viewers and Accounts engaged are "estimated and in-development", so expect them to shift as Instagram refines them. Instagram also says Views is "being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet".

### What about followers and "Content you shared"?

The same Help Center page says the Total followers insights need at least 100 followers. They show growth (followers gained or lost), top locations, age range and the times your followers are most active. Content you shared covers the preset or custom timeframe you choose, within the past 90 days.

## What is reach on Instagram, and is it the same as impressions?

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content at least once. Impressions counted every time it was on screen, so one account could add several. Instagram's current in-app pages describe unique accounts as **Viewers** and total plays or displays as **Views**, and Meta has deprecated impressions in its API.

Here is the sequence, using Meta's developer pages:

- **Reach.** Meta's [Instagram Account Insights reference](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/api-reference/instagram-user/insights) (updated June 16, 2026) defines reach as "the number of unique accounts that have seen your content, at least once". It adds that reach "is different from impressions, which may include multiple views of your content by the same accounts". Its sample response titles the metric "Accounts reached".
- **Impressions.** The same page marks impressions as deprecated for v22.0 and later, and for all versions on April 21, 2025. Meta's [Instagram Media Insights reference](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/reference/instagram-media/insights) (updated September 11, 2026) says that for media created after July 2, 2024 the impressions metric is deprecated.
- **Views.** The account reference introduces views as the new metric, with breakdowns by follower type and media product type. The media reference defines views for media as "the total number of times IG Media has been played on Instagram" and flags it as in development.

We did not find an Instagram help page that says "Viewers" is simply the new name for reach. The wording of the two definitions is the same idea (unique accounts that saw the content on screen), but Instagram does not state the equivalence, so treat it as a close match, not a guarantee. One more inconsistency: Meta's [Instagram Platform insights overview](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/insights), last updated January 21, 2025, still shows impressions in its examples.

## Where do I find Instagram Insights, and how far back does it go?

In the app, tap your profile picture, then **Professional dashboard** if you have a professional account or **Your dashboard** if you have a personal one. Instagram's page [About Instagram dashboards](https://help.instagram.com/257516379077270) says that if you do not see it there, go to Settings and activity, and tap **Insights** below **For professionals**, or **Your dashboard** below **Your insights and tools**.

On a computer, [View account and content insights on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/1533933820244654) says to select **Dashboard** from the left menu. Professional accounts then pick **Insights** below **For professionals**. Choose **Account** or **Content** from the Insights dropdown, then use the dropdown to set the date range.

- **Date ranges.** You can see any period within the past 90 days. On instagram.com the options are the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or a custom range whose start and end are at least one day apart. On the mobile app, [Select a date range for your account insights on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/1407497629635879) lists 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days.
- **Account type.** Instagram's pages disagree. [About Instagram insights](https://help.instagram.com/788388387972460) and the posts, reels and Stories insights pages say you need a public (personal or professional) account. [Troubleshoot viewing Instagram Insights on your business or creator account](https://help.instagram.com/684550305010470) says you view insights after you convert to a business or creator account. [Select a date range for your account insights on Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/1407497629635879) says its feature is only available to business and creator accounts on the mobile app, and [See insights for your Instagram account](https://help.instagram.com/775104229257413) says insights are only available to businesses and accounts with high levels of engagement. Instagram does not date these pages and we could not test which applies to your account, so open Insights in your own app to see.
- **Going private.** Switching to a private account loses access to insights, and Instagram says you can regain access to past data by going back to public within 90 days.
- **Audience demographics.** You need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached or engaged. If the last 7 days shows nothing, Instagram suggests a longer preset such as 30 days.

Old content is kept longer than the 90-day window. Instagram's pages say post insights are available for up to two years, story insights for up to two years, and reel insights for up to two years after publishing (for reels posted on or after May 14, 2021).

## What do Instagram story insights mean?

Story insights use the same names as the rest of Insights but with story-specific definitions. Instagram's page [View insights on your Instagram Stories](https://help.instagram.com/383939598845756) lists these:

- **Views:** the number of times your story was played or displayed.
- **Viewers:** unique accounts that saw your story at least once.
- **Interactions:** actions such as replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement.
- **Accounts engaged:** unique accounts that interacted, for example by replying, sharing or tapping stickers.
- **Profile activity:** actions taken from your story, such as profile visits, follows or website clicks.

The page says stories expire after 24 hours, but you can still view their insights for up to two years. To open them from a computer, click **Options** at the top right of the story and choose **View insights**. Past stories appear on your Insights page under **Top content based on engagement**. For how link taps relate to real visits, see our guide on [how to see who clicked your Instagram link](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-see-who-clicked-your-instagram-link).

## How do post, Reel and Story insights differ?

The metric list changes with the content type. Instagram's three content pages list these, as of October 6, 2026:

| Content | Metrics listed | Source page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Post | Views, Interactions, Profile activity | View insights on your Instagram posts |
| Reel | Views, Watch time, Viewers, Average watch time, Follows | View insights on your Instagram reels |
| Story | Views, Viewers, Interactions, Accounts engaged, Profile activity | View insights on your Instagram Stories |

The overview page adds that for posts, stories and Instagram Live you can split Accounts engaged into followers and non-followers. It lists Views, Viewers, Interactions and Accounts engaged for individual posts, reels, stories and Live videos, while the posts page lists only Views, Interactions and Profile activity. Instagram does not explain the difference, so the screens you see may not match this table. We did not open a dedicated Live insights page.

Instagram's [reels insights page](https://help.instagram.com/202865988324236) adds three definitions. **Watch time** is the total time your reel was played, including replays. **Average watch time** is watch time divided by the number of initial views, where an initial view is the first time the reel starts to play in a reel session. **Follows** is how many accounts started following you as a result of viewing the reel.

The page also says that for reels, Views is the number of times a reel starts to play or replay, while Viewers counts accounts that saw it on screen whether or not it played. So Viewers can include accounts that never pressed play, which is why the two are not a simple pair. If you work with Reels, our guide to [how long an Instagram Reel can be](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-long-can-an-instagram-reel-be) covers length limits.

## What do Instagram Insights not show?

The Insights definitions we read describe a count, a unique-account count or a group breakdown, not a list of the accounts behind a number. Story viewers are a separate feature: Instagram's page [How to tell who's seen your Instagram story](https://help.instagram.com/202055156863605) says you can swipe up on your story to see the usernames of people who viewed it, for up to 48 hours after you post, and that only you can see the list. The story view number includes replays, so it can be higher than the number of usernames. We did not check other content types, so look at the screens in your own app.

The pages also list limits that change how far you can trust a number:

- **Estimated metrics.** Viewers and Accounts engaged are marked estimated and in development.
- **Thresholds.** Audience demographics need more than 100 accounts, and total followers insights need at least 100 followers.
- **Top groups only.** Meta's account reference says demographic metrics return only the top 45 performers, and only viewers with demographic data count, so summing them can come in below your follower count.
- **Delays.** Meta says the data behind metrics can lag by up to 48 hours.

## How is Insights different from Meta's API metrics?

Developer tools read Meta's API, which uses different metric names and, in some cases, slightly different definitions from the in-app screen. If a third-party tool shows a different number from Instagram, this is the first place to look.

- **Names.** The API calls them `reach`, `views`, `saved` (`saves` on the account), `shares`, `total_interactions` and `accounts_engaged` (account level only). The in-app screen shows Viewers, Views, Interactions and Accounts engaged. Meta's account reference defines `views` as "played or displayed", while its media reference says "played on Instagram".
- **Account type.** Meta's [Instagram Platform insights overview](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/instagram-platform/insights) says the API cannot return data for media owned by personal Instagram accounts.
- **Interactions.** In the app, Interactions is actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares. In the media reference, `total_interactions` is likes, saves, comments and shares "minus the number of unlikes, unsaves, and deleted comments".
- **Ads.** The in-app Views definition says content includes ads. The media reference says `views` reports organic interactions only, and a separate `total_views` includes boosted media and Facebook views (Facebook Login only).
- **Stories.** Meta says story media metrics are available through the API for only 24 hours, and story metrics with a value under 5 return an error, "Not enough viewers for the media to show insights". The Help Center says story insights stay in the app for up to two years.

## Which Instagram metrics does TrackMedia read?

TrackMedia reads a small set of Instagram numbers through Meta's API. These come from the API and may differ in name or definition from the Insights screen in the app, as the section above explains. TrackMedia does not reproduce Instagram Insights.

- **Per post:** likes and comments (from the media record), plus views, reach, saves and shares from the media insights edge.
- **Per account:** followers, following, number of posts, reach and views. Reach and views are requested without a start or end date, which Meta's account reference says makes the API look back 24 hours, so they are not the 7, 30 or 90 day figures in the app.
- **Engagement rate:** TrackMedia's own calculation, `total_interactions` divided by reach (likes plus comments when `total_interactions` is missing), capped at 100 percent. It is not an Instagram metric.

TrackMedia does not request impressions, profile activity, Accounts engaged, watch time, follows, audience demographics or story insights. Its analytics overview has a tile labelled "Impressions"; for Instagram it shows the `views` number, because Instagram no longer supplies impressions. Reading insights needs Meta's insights permission on the connection. Without it, TrackMedia can still record follower counts, but the insight numbers are missing. TrackMedia's [analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/#analytics) bring figures from each connected network into one view, and imported posts, which were not published through TrackMedia, are ranked alongside the ones that were.

## How we checked this

We opened each page below in a browser on October 6, 2026 and copied definitions and menu names from it. Some help pages are device-gated: we read 788388387972460, 1533933820244654, 553860108359435, 202865988324236 and 383939598845756 in the computer view, and 202055156863605 in the iPhone view. We did not open Insights on a live Instagram account, so we could not confirm how the screens look today, whether Views has reached your account, or which account types can open Insights. Where Instagram's own pages disagree we say so. TrackMedia's own behavior comes from its Instagram connector code, read the same day.
