# What does FYP mean on TikTok?

FYP means For You page, TikTok's personalized main feed. Here is how it picks videos, how to shape yours, and what #fyp does and does not do.

*Guides · Published 2026-10-26*

FYP means "For You page", the personalized feed you see when you open TikTok. TikTok's own Help Center calls it the For You feed and describes it as a feed of content based on your interests and engagement, and the first feed you see when you open the app. "FYP" is the shorthand creators and viewers use for the same thing.

This guide uses TikTok's Help Center, its recommendation system page and its newsroom explainer, all read on October 22, 2026. It covers what FYP stands for, how TikTok chooses what appears there, how to shape your own feed, and what the #fyp hashtag can and cannot do for your videos.

## What does FYP stand for on TikTok?

FYP stands for "For You page". TikTok's official pages use slightly different names for it: the Help Center says "For You feed" and the recommendation system page abbreviates that as FYF. They all describe one thing, the main feed where TikTok recommends videos from accounts you may not follow.

You will also see "fyp" as a hashtag or caption tag. Creators add it hoping a video lands on more For You pages. Whether that works is a separate question, answered below.

Step 3, rank by score. Step 4, similarity check to swap near-duplicates such as the same sound. Step 5, apply recommendation rules, such as content from accounts under 16 being ineligible.](https://www.trackmedia.app/assets/img/blog/what-does-fyp-mean-on-tiktok-fig1.svg)

## How does the For You feed work?

TikTok describes a five-step process on its [recommendation system page](https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/policies-and-engagement/recommendation-system). First, it selects a large set of videos that passed its initial content moderation and are eligible for the feed. It then predicts how likely you are to interact with each, for example the chance you like, share, comment on or skip a video, and combines those into an overall score.

Next it ranks videos from the highest score to the lowest and builds your feed from the top ones. A similarity check swaps out videos that are too alike, with the page's example being videos that use the same sound. Finally, recommendation rules apply at different points. The page gives two examples: videos in your feed should include content from creators in your region, and content from accounts aged under 16 is ineligible for recommendation.

Two points from the page matter for creators. Content that does not pass moderation is removed, and content that is not suitable for a broad audience is made ineligible for recommendation. The page also says the system is designed to be impartial to the content it recommends.

### What signals does TikTok use?

The recommendation system page lists examples of signals from you: the videos you recently watched, finished, liked or skipped, and your follow relationships. It also lists your region, the language your device is set to and your device's operating system. It says other people's behavior counts too: if another user engaged with two of the same videos you did, the system may predict you will like a third video that user engaged with.

Signals about the video are also listed:

- The time the video was posted and the region it was posted from.
- The language setting of the video's author.
- The video's soundtrack and its length.
- The hashtags associated with the video.

TikTok's 2020 [newsroom explainer](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/how-tiktok-recommends-videos-for-you) groups the factors into user interactions, video information, and device and account settings, and adds that follower count and whether an account had previous high-performing videos are not direct factors. The page is dated June 18, 2020, so treat the newer recommendation system page as the current one.

## Why does TikTok show you a certain video?

You can ask TikTok directly. Its [For You help page](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7581820706028296760) gives these steps:

1. **Open the TikTok app** and go to your For You feed.
2. **Tap the Share button** on the side of the post.
3. **Tap Why this post.** TikTok lists some reasons the post appeared.

The page's example reasons include that you commented on, liked, shared or watched similar posts, that the post is popular in your country, that it was created recently, that it is longer and you seem to enjoy longer videos, and that you follow the creator. You can then tap **Adjust your For You** to tailor your feed. The page notes that after a recent refresh TikTok shows some popular content to help reshape your recommendations.

## How to change what appears on your For You page

TikTok names four controls on its help page and three on its recommendation system page, and they overlap. The labels below come from those pages:

- **Not interested.** Long-press a video in your For You feed and select Not interested. TikTok says it will limit how much of that content it recommends.
- **Refresh.** Refresh your For You feed to help TikTok reshape your recommendations. The recommendation system page says this lets you explore entirely new sides of TikTok.
- **Filter keywords.** Add words or hashtags to filter from your For You feed. The help page says the filters apply to your For You and Following feeds.
- **Manage topics.** Adjust your preferences for different topics.

The help page also describes Feed Interest Cards, which may appear in your feed and open the Explore page for a topic. It says they may not be available in your region.

## Does adding #fyp help your video get on the For You page?

TikTok's pages do not say it does. Hashtags appear on its list of video signals ("the hashtags associated with the video"), so they are one input among many, and the page names no special hashtag that boosts a video. We found no statement from TikTok that tagging a video with #fyp, #foryou or similar raises its chances.

What TikTok does document: eligibility, moderation, and how viewers respond. A video must pass moderation and be suitable for a broad audience to be eligible. Then the prediction step estimates whether a given viewer will watch, like, share or skip it. Writing a caption that tells viewers what the video is about, and using hashtags that describe it, gives the system accurate information. Our guide to [posting videos on TikTok](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-post-videos-on-tiktok) covers captions and settings.

Does posting time matter? TikTok lists the time a video was posted as a signal, but publishes no best hour. See the [best time to post on TikTok](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok) for how to find your own, and read whether [scheduling a TikTok affects views](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/does-scheduling-a-post-on-tiktok-affect-views).

## What is the difference between the For You page and the Following feed?

The For You feed is TikTok's recommendations, built by the steps above. The Following feed is the one TikTok's help page mentions alongside it, where keyword filters also apply. TikTok's pages in this batch do not describe the Following feed's ordering, so we do not claim how it sorts. What matters for a creator is that the For You feed reaches people who do not follow you yet, so a video's success is not limited to your follower count.

That is also why checking results per video beats watching the follower number. Our guide to [checking TikTok analytics](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-check-tiktok-analytics) shows where TikTok reports views and traffic sources.

## How to track your TikTok results with TrackMedia

TrackMedia lets you publish to TikTok from the same composer you use for 20 other networks, and then see how each video did. You connect TikTok through its authorization window, with no password shared.

- **Post once, fitted per network.** Write the caption once, get a TikTok version and preflight checks before it goes out. TikTok videos run 9:16 in the connector, up to 10 minutes.
- **Views, likes, comments and shares per video.** TrackMedia reads each video's numbers on a schedule and keeps every reading, so you can see what happened after a post.
- **Followers over time.** A daily follower reading per connected account shows growth next to what you posted.
- **Clicks from TikTok.** Put a tracked link with UTM tags in your bio to see the visitors TikTok sends you. For the steps, see [how to put a link in your TikTok bio](https://www.trackmedia.app/blog/how-to-put-a-link-in-your-tiktok-bio).

Whether a given video reached the For You page is something TikTok does not report as a single label in the data TrackMedia reads, so judge reach by views and by how many came from non-followers in TikTok's own analytics.
